Top 5 Tips For A Successful Skype or Phone Interview

With todays technology applicants come from far and wide.

Skype or phone interviews are more and more common – there are a number of ways to help you get through the process and put you in a good position for success.

  1. Tone of Voice

While talking on Skype or on the phone may not come naturally to you, it does not have the same pressure as being face to face. Your tone of voice will be important – be aware of how you come across – relax and smile while speaking, it will allow you to sound confident.

  1. Be professional

Although you may be at home or in a more comfortable environment, avoid eating, drinking or having distractions like the television or radio on. Check your camera angle and what’s in the background of your shot. Dress appropriately and make sure the environment is quiet so you can focus on the interview.

  1. Stand up and take note!

If it is a phone interview, walking around can help your voice come across more effectively. On Skype make sure the lighting is good so you can be seen clearly. Use a clear voice, and try to avoid “ums” and “arhs” this can imply that you are affected by nerves.

  1. Have your application on hand

Having your resume on hand will help you answer any questions regarding your application. Be prepared, read through their requirements 15 minutes before the interview so the information is fresh in your mind.

  1. Actively Listen!

Listen carefully to the prospective employer. Don’t interrupt them anticipating what they will be asking. Wait for the whole question to be asked before attempting to answer. It will also give you a bit more time to think about your answer. Using words such as “ok” or “right” at intervals will let the interviewer know that you are actively listening.

Do a trial run with a friend to see how you come across both on the phone and via Skype. Set up your camera angle, test that for positioning and lighting.
